Southwest Power Pool covers a vast, windy stretch of the central United States. As a regional transmission organization it serves members in all or part of 17 states, a territory of about 732,086 square miles. EIA lists it as SWPP; you will see that code in the data.

Wind is what sets SPP apart. Wind produced 36.7% of its energy in 2025, more than any other fuel. In the capacity ledger the picture is different: wind is only 8.4% of accredited capacity, so the share of energy and the share of firm supply are very different things. When the wind drops on a still summer evening, other fuels must cover the gap.

Demand is climbing. SPP’s coincident peak load was 58,181 MW on 7/27/2026, and summer afternoons define the system’s stress. Because SPP and MISO are joined by interties, congestion in one region can show up in the other.

Official SPP prices are published by SPP; we do not show prices on this page. You see hourly demand, net generation, net interchange and generation by fuel where reported, from the EIA Hourly Electric Grid Monitor. Values are preliminary, revised later, delayed by an hour or two, and refreshed every three hours. Not for trading or operational decisions.
