New South Wales is the NSW1 region of Australia’s National Electricity Market, the grid that links the eastern and south-eastern states. AEMO runs the market and publishes dispatch results every five minutes through NEMWEB. Our page shows the regional spot price and the regional demand figure. The price is stamped at the start of the five-minute interval it covers, although AEMO’s file labels it with the interval end, and NEM time is AEST, ten hours ahead of UTC, so there is no summer-time shift in the data.

The demand number is AEMO’s total demand field for the region. AEMO’s public dashboard shows a different measure, close to cleared supply, so expect small differences between the two. We do not publish a generation mix for NSW because AEMO’s own registration list is not yet part of our feed.

NSW is Australia’s most populous state and its price tends to be shaped by coal. The Eraring coal station is scheduled to run until April 2029 after an extension by its owner. Prices spike when hot or cold days lift demand while a large unit is offline, or when interstate links to Queensland and Victoria are limited. Midday prices fall as rooftop and utility solar grow.

Limitations: spot prices are the dispatch price, not what households pay, and AEMO can revise one in rare cases (for example an administered price period).
