Tasmania is the TAS1 region of the National Electricity Market, an island at the end of a single undersea cable. The page shows AEMO’s five-minute spot price and the regional demand. The defining feature is hydropower: Tasmania’s generation is predominantly hydro, and the dams store water that can be turned into power on short notice.

That makes Tasmanian prices a story of water and wires. In a wet period with full storages the island exports power to Victoria through Basslink, and the price follows the mainland. When storages are low, the same cable lets the island import, and the hydro operator has to decide when to hold water back. Price differences with Victoria therefore tell you more about the cable and about reservoir management than about short-term demand.

Basslink is rated at about 500 MW, which is small compared with the mainland regions, so Tasmania can be cut off from mainland prices when the link is full or out of service.

We show no generation mix for Tasmania, so the hydro share is not displayed here. Prices are five-minute dispatch prices in Australian dollars, and NEM time is AEST, ten hours ahead of UTC, although Tasmania’s local clocks run an hour ahead of it whenever daylight saving applies.
